EA-Land closing & Player Campaigns!

We all know that it has been announced on the 29th of April that EA-Land/The Sims Online will be closing its doors on the 1st of August 2008, by a post made by EA on the official blog in this post. It is extremely sad and devastating to see our all-time favorite game closing down its doors, specially after 8 months of hard work from the developers to improve the game and bring in new features. The decision by EA sounds extremely irrational that we can’t explain it by anything else than that EA needs some serious re-employment of managers. Why spend all this time, effort and money on something they are going to close anyways? Why put the developers into such a huge task and headache? Why bring back hope to thousands of people and then close it down?

There has been a promise of the Amnesty Program (explained in this post) to be issued before the end of April, and on the night of the promised day, we get another unexpected and unpleasant announcement instead of the Amnesty, which by the way, brought back hundreds of subscribers back to the game, that the game was closing. It sounds as a rip-off from EA … they tell us to come back, they take the subscription money of a couple of months and tells the community that it is closing. Another thing, the introduction of the ATM machines, which drove people to start buying from EA in-game currency (Simoleans), being certain that they will benefit from it as the game will become better in the future and they could use it to make a profitable business that would let them gain real $$ in the future as the cash-out feature was promised, however, never implemented. This, after hundreds of complains and possible threats of lawsuits, EA has decided to refund all the money used to buy simoleans from the ATM (published in this post on the official blog) … fair enough. However, many people have upgraded their computers or even bought new ones as we were promised that TSO/EA-Land would be moving towards The Sims 2 graphics. Many other people bought time-cards … and we guess that none of these will be refunded.

Don’t blame the developers, they have worked their butts off for all of us to have a better gameplay and new features almost weekly. Personally, I believe that the developers didn’t even know about the plans of closing EA Land since they would’ve not promised us the amnesty. I can’t believe that the developers will go into all this headache and exhaustion for nothing. Reminding that Lee left EA after EALand was announced to be closing. It also worth reminding that the last few weeks before the huge announcement was made, there was a lack of communication from the developers, with a possible reason of negotiating this decision with the top management, or simply, they have been told to leave their offices and stop working on the game.

EA has never given EA-Land much of a time or chance to succeed or to see whether it can at least attract more subscribers. Only a couple of months were given after announcing the opening of EA-Land beta . Do you think that is enough for a game to succeed?! The 11 developers worked on the game for more than 8 months and did the tasks of probably a 100 developers would do. 8 months does nothing to a game, specially with a small number of developers working on it. It should’ve been given a longer time.

The community, with the huge amount of rage and sadness expressed to the world, have decided to start up a huge campaign called PlayerCampaigns (www.playercampaigns.com) to attempt to save the game. Different ideas are being introduced and many easy, simple but effective tasks are found in the forums for everyone to do that would benefit the game. Please don’t think this is a stupid idea, many other communities have succeeded to save their favorite game. The help and support of anyone is greatly appreciated, and every single person can contribute and have a huge effect on the destiny of this game, even if you never played it. For example, the internet radios were about to go into a point were most of them would’ve closed due to some new laws and pricings, however, the community made a campaign and got the support of more people where they were sending emails to officials and more, which ended up in saving the internet radios and all those decisions were not implemented. Please join us at the PlayerCampaigns site and contribute as much as possible in any idea or task. This game has meant more than just a game for mostly everyone, it has been an escape from real life and a second home to many. Many people with disabilites were now able to talk, walk, meet and make new friends. Many people met their future wives/husbands, their all time best friends, their girl or boy friends. Many have gone through deaths, marriages, sicknesses, new babies born and more together. The memories and friends made over 6 years should never be underestimated and we don’t want that to end 😦 … imagine this happening to your favorite game!!

Any support is forever appreciated and PLEASE spread the word.

Lack of communication?

Loads and loads of new threads are being posted in the city hall of stratics forums regarding the lack of communication lately from the developers. Many people are worrying that the game is coming to an end or the developers no longer exist, which are nothing but rumors.

We highly doubt that the developers, after putting all this time and effort onto the game will finally close it. Why work in the first place? They are still providing updates … lately, they have implemented the anti-bot measures and the custom appearances. Plus, they have many plans for the future, such as improved custom content, owning more than one lot, new objects, scripting, etc…

The last post made on their blog was on the 16th of April, which is not long ago, so they still exist.
Another reasons why they might not be posting on the blog or stratics is taking a little vacation or break, or celebrating along with other EA employees the celebrations of 100 million copies sold of The Sims franchise.

Finally, there is a slight chance that the developers have chosen to communicate less information to us, due to many users just being negative, or they received some instructions from higher management. Not to forget that there might be unfinished updates to report, in the first place. It is better for them to work than reading the forum and posting.

There are tons of different reasons which we are unaware of, but that does not mean that they dont exist anymore or the game is shutting down. We will have to wait and see… during this time, enjoy playing the game 🙂

End of the horrible lag?

The lag found in EA Land has been unbearable for a quite long time. It made the game almost unplayable for many and endless complains and threads were posted on stratics regarding this issue.

The developers announced that EA Land is re-setting at 3 PM (PST) and 10 PM (PST) through the weekend! According to the official EA Land blog, “this should prevent the lag from occuring later this evening”

Let’s hope this would improve the conditions since the developers are also looking into a better fix. 🙂

Exploit found

EA Land has been down for a quite long time and will stay for more since an exploit was found and the developers are currently trying to fix it. Far as we know, the exploit has been caused by a bug, which, after a specific procedure, grants you simoleans (or whatever their name will be). This has caused much money to enter the economy and be spent.

Previously – in the pub, parizad mentioned as the topic of exploits was discussed, that they had a special system  in place that would sound off a warning and immediately shut down the game if there was a sudden influx of simoleans. It is unclear why the city did not shut down this time … “The sound off happened. We all got a lovely e-mail when we were all asleep. However, the city did not shut down. I don’t have an answer as to why. We can’t begin to look at that until we’ve put out the current fire.

Right now, our #1 issue is to get you guys back in EA-Land.” Parizad said.

They are currently working on getting us back into EA Land. Meanwhile, join the city hall party thread here. Make sure to keep checking the sims stratics site and the developer’s blog.

Free Players: Access Granted!

lightWhat a happy day for free subscribers: you have been granted access into EA-Land! Make sure to login and create a sim in EAL for you not to miss the extra fun and all the news happening there! Believe me, you won’t regret it. However, at the moment, free players will only have access into residence lots, cannot earn simoleans, skill, trade or own houses. The issue of restriction is currently debated at many various threads and websites, we hope to see changes soon. This does not seem boring as you might now think, you will get to meet new people in a green-free lot, enjoy all the transaction, check out custom objects created by other members at their lots and stores. Enjoy your time with subscribers, see what they can do and make sure to subscribe for it’s a world of endless possibilities out there! Big Grin

Bug: Broken Items

EA Land and Test Center 3 are now facing an awkward bug that causes the objects to break (as shown left). This tricky bug has kept the developers to stay working on weekends. It has been announced on the TSO-E blog that they are planning to visit all those closed lots in Test Center 3 and fix any broken objects found. A message would be sent informing the people what they believe was fixed. Not to forget that any fixed objects would be brought back into the inventory of the owner (of the object). The developer team is planning to fix these objects in Test Center 3 first, however, if everything goes really well and they get to fix the objects in Test Center 3, they are to go to EA Land and fix any broken objects there too. Please remember that the developer team has never done anything like this before (as announced on the blog by Sarah), meaning that this would take a few days, if not more, so please be patient. The picture available above only shows an example of the broken objects in EA Land.

New EA-Land website!

ea-land website EA-Land now has a whole new website. You can check it by visiting www.ea-land.com . The site might need a whole makeover since it looks slightly unprofessional, but at least a site is found for all former and new users to visit, find out more about the game and join. Finally, something that would make many people happy, is that Luc is asking us (the community) to build the website and add contents to it, so make sure to contribute and add new pages and ideas using the wiki.

There is currently many empty pages, however, most of the basic and important pages have been already done. I bet that Luc and the other developers would not mind us suggesting any new designs to the website, letting this creative community to contribute in any possible way.

Some interesting and useful pages have been added, such as, the history of TSO and the key differences between TSO and EA-Land. Don’t wait any longer, visit the website now.

EA-Land launched!

Can this get more exciting? Well, we dont think so! The dramatic changes that we were looking forward to in years is finally happening! EA-Land opened its gates on exactly 2:18pm EST on the 18th of January, a day we will never forget. The new city will soon include all cities merged with it. These cities include the production cities, Dragon’s Cove and Betaville. To any new players, the production cities are: Blazing Falls, Alphaville, Interhogan, Dan’s Grove, Calvin’s Creek, Jolly Pines, East Jerome, Fancy Fields and Mount Fuji. It’s worth noting that Test Center and Test Center 3 won’t be merged with the rest of the cities since they will be only used for testing purposes (new features, codes…), as the name applies.

A surprise that we all felt happy about is the availability of many EA houses on an island (Isle EA) to help existing and new players around. The houses are: EA Town Hall, EA Store, EA slow skill, EA Roach Motel and EA Simolean Hut. However, these houses will soon be closed after the first few days of EA-Land, leaving only the EA Store.

According to Lee in EA Town Hall, this is the official and permanent release of EA Land and that is if nothing goes terribly wrong. Moreover, he admitted that EA Land is currently full of bugs that will be fixed soon, as the game still needs a lot of work.

As for the merge, it is more likely to take place in a week or two, ending up with 1 sim from EA Land, 3 from other cities and 4 from Betaville. Furthermore, Lee commented that the developers are not yet sure of which cities are going to get merged first where EA Land came second on the first day after Alphaville with about 169 sims online in the first 15 minutes. However, a few days later, the list has been published (shown below).

In the future, the ATM machine would be activated in EA Land (it is already in-game but not active), new objects would be introduced, plans to improve skilling, portals and owning more than 1 house per sim will be implemented.

Finally, to all of you who are wondering why the game is called EA Land … apparently (according to Lee), the name EA Land was kicked a long time ago as in a land of EA games.

The above picture is taken in the new EA Town Hall of MaxisLee answering a variety of questions from different people just a few minutes after the opening of EA Land.

Its worth noting that EA Land currently looks like Test Center 3 with nothing exactly new, however, its the start of something outstanding.

The order of the cities getting merged:

  1. East Jerome
  2. Dan’s Grove
  3. Calvin’s Creek
  4. Alphaville
  5. Dragon’s Cove
  6. Interhogan
  7. Fancey Fields
  8. Jolly Pines
  9. Blazing Falls
  10. Mount Fuji
  11. BetavilleÂ
